Bye Bye, TV

television
Jeff and I recently came to the realization (the same day they took away our free-for-the-first- however-many-months HBO, incidentally) that we pay an ungodly amount for cable every month. Adelphia is stealing $86.32 from us each month; $42.95 for high-speed internet and $43.31 for cable television. I don’t have a problem with the internet charge- we totally get our money’s worth there.

But I can’t believe that we have been paying almost $45 a month to watch Ellen, Dr. Phil, I love the 80’s 3D (who is the genius who decided two versions of that show weren’t enough?), and Boobah (one of Ethan’s favorites). All the must-see primetime shows (Lost, The OC, Prison Break, Rome, Supernatural, etc.), Jeff downloads and we watch at our convenience, since what we do between the hours of 8 and 10 at night tends to be ruled by King Ethan and what he wants to do.

And the rest of the time, the TV is just on to be on. We concluded that we watch too much when two things happened: One, we would start speaking and forget what we were saying halfway through the sentence; we’d lost the ability to carry on conversations. And two, in an effort to calm a fussy Ethan, one of us said to him “Look, TV! The TV is on, Ethan, look!” and immediately his eyes glazed over and he and Kate Couric were the only two people in the room and all fussing ceased. That kid will watch anything. He is only 5 months old! We could only look at each other and wonder: What are we doing to our son?

Thus, today marks the first day of no more cable in the Adams household. They turned it off around 10 this morning, yet for some reason, we still get Court TV, the WB (minus audio) and Bravo. Apparently these are the channels that Adelphia feels no person must have to suffer without. Whatever the reason, I’m a little relieved that we have those channels, at least. For one thing, I wasn’t sure what I would stare at the next time I nursed Ethan. A wall? The floor?

Update: We got our first bill from Adelphia since we nixed the cable: $27.38. Can’t complain about that.

wait, do you not have any channels other than those 3 now? cause if you have basic cable (the cable of choice among law students), then you should still get the WB (not that i watch the WB and would know that) and bravo does tend to come in for free no matter what your cable choice (i think because they realize that it’s not humane to expect people to live without their project runway).

nope. only those couple of channels. we don’t have basic cable even. no, network channels. we don’t even get them over the air.

can’t we just pretend for one minute that i am cooler than you? it’s so rare that a law student is cooler than a non-law student. just give me this… :o)

project runway’s new season begins december 7. i can’t wait! and we also get, though it was not mentioned, the travel channel and (snowy) tvland. and jeff, you forgot one of the other advantages: maybe we’ll gain back the part of our brains we lost from too much tv.

caley, i have a couple of different tv shows on dvd (as in all three seasons of 21 jump street!) if you wanted to borrow any for those nursing moments. although i want you to get back the brain power you lose from tv, i worry a bit about you staring at a wall.
